Located in Rome, Ohio, Hummingbird Farm is the passionate beginnings of AJ and Chrissy Janesko vision to build a therapeutic farm refuge for women battling terminal cancer.
AJ’s sister, Suzi, passed away in 2013 after a long battle with cancer. Before she passed she told her brother that everytime he saw a hummingbird to know it was her looking out for him. This was a comment that touched him and he shared with those most close to him. One summer night while having dinner with friends, a discussion started on how they could honor her life. An annual event…a non-profit…foundation. Then the idea of a therapeutic farm was mentioned. Just then a hummingbird flew directly over their table and hoovered for what seemed to be 30 seconds. Everyone knew she was in approval and through tears of joyful inspiration they began plotting their plan. In 2016 the Janesko’s purchased a historic 1850 farmhouse on 33 acres in Rome, Ohio. Condemned and advised to tear down and start again they saw hope and decided to restore this beaten down property and give it a new beginning. Now the home is finished and the Farm projects begin. Chrysalis is honored to have the opportunity to manage this project and bring its hope into our community of amazing partners.
Hummingbird Farm is managed by Chrysalis Community and together our goal is to raise food in a bio-diverse permaculture environment, doing our best to let creation do the work. We believe in the healing and restorative properties of food and want the greater community to know we here to represent small craft farms and sustainable farming practices. Our Organically Grown Non-GMO Heirloom Produce will be grown under the guidance of Paul Gauchy (Back to Eden). Our meat and dairy products will be from Rotational Grazed Animals on Organic Pastures (Joel Salitan). We will also look to do some Pasture Cropping of Grains and other Cash Crops as well as harvest Honey and Maple Syrups from our 10 acres of maple forest. All our food will be for sale to the public through our Community Supported Agriculture shares program. We hope you join us in both changing the way food is grown and changing the lives of others!
We are looking to raise $62,500 more to ensure Hummingbird Farm becomes a home of transformation and new life!
This property will begin to generate income immediately, raising chickens, growing organic produce and pasturing cattle. This Spring (2018) we look to convert 1/2 an acre to Organic Vegetables, 1 to Hops and the rest to Livestock and Honey Bees. This property will also eventually be home to our Outreach Tiny Home Village.
Both barns are in need of repair. We plan to finish the conversion of one to a Workshop/Garage this Spring (2018) and the other to our Feed and Livestock Barn by end of Fall 2018. Before winter hits, we also hope to finish construction on our winter chicken tractor. We ask for your help funding these renovations!
This past Spring 2018 we moved our 100 Americauna chickens in to this amazing chicken tractor home. We will be following Joel Sallatin’s methods even through the winter. With the help of amazing supporters we will be completely enclosing the tractor with greenhouse plastic to provide a warm home we will use 3 fold. First as a safe winter home for our broiler and layer breed stock, second as a way to fertilize our produce garden…the tractor will be moved all over the produce acre this winter and lastly and a greenhouse for our spring seedlings! We still need some help so donate today!
Late Fall 2018 we will look to downsize our chickens for the winter and in the Snow Belt of Ohio we will need a large efficient greenhouse. Like the photo below our greenhouse will be a winter home to our chickens but it will also serve the produce arm of the farm. However, we will be using our Chicken Tractor as that Greenhouse and its winter home will be our 1/2 acre produce garden! With this structure, women who come stay with us will have the ability to still participate in our unique therapeutic program…and it will work to prepare our soil for the Spring!
